In 1930s Budapest, de András takes a job as a pianist in a László restaurant. However, they both fall in love with the waiter Ilona, who inspires András to write his composition Gloomy Sunday. Then one day the German Hans Wieck steps into the restaurant, who also falls in love with Ilona.
