Very mediocre Ang Lee.

Again actually. It is rare that I find an Ang Lee film worth watching, usually it ends in a fail. Unfortunately, Se, Jie doesn't escape it either.

In any case, I missed the beautiful cinematography, despite the fact that it was apparently awarded in Venice. The film just looks very solid, a well-behaved style that looks very boring. To be honest, I can't do much with it, for nice pictures I'll put on other Taiwanese/Chinese films. Plenty of choice in that region.

Perhaps more surprising is that I found Tony Leung's acting somewhat disappointing. Not that it was bad, but I usually expect something extra from him and that was not in this film. He kind of runs on autopilot throughout the film. Wei Tang was also a bit too static for me. I usually like understated acting, but it didn't really work out here.

Story and setting are not very special, the spy who falls in love with her target, I know a few. Only Tang's motivation might be an extra factor here, but I can't say that I found it so intriguing.

The film goes by quietly, without too many ups and downs. That's not enough for something that takes 160 minutes. Overall a bit too boring.

War drama with a very strong erotic slant - the eroticism is in the story - very cleverly portrayed with beautiful close-ups, atmospheric street scenes of the Chinese metropolis, tension, although the story sometimes runs a bit slowly.

Just above average and yet again admiration for the cinematic qualities of an Ang Lee.

Se, Jie

Atmospheric film by Ang Lee. Especially the sets and the way in which Shanghai of the 1930s/40s is brought to life is impressive, and the story is also intriguing. Compliments also for the beautiful costumes (especially those of Wei Tang).

In the beginning, the time jump was a bit confusing, but actually after ten minutes I was completely drawn into the tragic story of Wong Chia Chi. Se, Jie is thrilling, tragic and full of eroticism, and the chemistry between Wei Tang and Tony Leung explodes from the screen. Fortunately, because otherwise the story would have collapsed like a plum pudding. The only downside is that the last part is tragic and a nice closing, but Lee could have created a little more tension. A small downside, because Se, jie is otherwise a beautiful film.
