In his most successful period, Hitchcock made two atypical films, this is one of them. The subject matter and even the motifs in the story are entirely up to him, but the difference lies in the fact that the film is based on a true event and Hitchcock wanted to convey it with documentary precision.

When Manny Balestrero wants to apply for a loan on his wife's life insurance policy, an employee recognizes him as a robber. Manny is arrested by the police and all witnesses recognize him as the robber. How can he prove his innocence now?

Because Hitchcock did not want to distract the viewer from the story, The Wrong Man contains no innovative camera tricks or visual feats. In the middle of his Technicolor period, it suddenly becomes a black-and-white film, just like Psycho by the way.

Henry Fonda plays a strong role and the realism is appreciated. Sometimes reality is bizarre. However, the deviation from his usual stylization makes the film a lot less strong than we are used to from him.

Hitchcock has a nose for good stories anyway. Because the story behind The Wrong Man actually happened and is interesting in itself. The choice is made to stay as close to the real facts as possible. Unfortunately, it therefore lacks Hitchcock's own approach. Because that way there is more focus on the storyline of Rose Balestrero, and I would have preferred to see how the tension builds to see a case of someone who innocently flies into the cell. With the suspense of whether he would have done it anyway, and if he were innocent how he could get out of it.

Fonda's somewhat stiff acting does suit the character. And Hitchcock is still a good director who can make a beautiful film even with a less script (on an admittedly fascinating story).

Hitchcock could afford to alternate films for the general public with films that offered him a new challenge. Fonda is nothing short of amazing in this documentary-style reconstruction of the story of "Manny" Balestrero, a nightclub bassist who was wrongfully arrested and convicted of a series of robberies in 1953. This film depicts the confluence of circumstances that resulted in Balestrero's arrest, the entire course of the investigation - in which the detectives' patience and sympathy is most striking - and Hitchcock brilliantly manages to show, through mere visual means, how Manny feels. Vera Miles is also fantastic as Manny's wife who breaks down completely when she begins to doubt Manny's innocence. Miles was therefore the original choice for the lead role in Hitchcock's sequel Vertigo, but withdrew when she turned out to be pregnant.
