Yasujiro Ozu combines tranquil camera angles with a beautiful color palette in 'Sanma No Aji'. The story about the difficult dependent relationship of a single father with his daughter is overwhelmed by alcohol and drunkenness. Ultimately, the drink also leads to wisdom. Logical anyway. Compelling and at the same time extremely soothing. Worth watching (again). Make sure you watch the most recent DVD or Blu Ray version to fully experience the richness of color.

Ozu's gossip movie. The film may be almost 60 years old from another culture on the other side of the world, but this makes the film feel surprisingly current and universal. Apparently gossip is a common denominator. This makes the film very light-hearted, extremely enjoyable to watch and sometimes genuinely funny. The plot is mainly intended as a framework for all kinds of separate scenes in which interpersonal relationships are shown such as father-child, husband-wife, boss-employee, etc. And it is the perfect pace that dictates the film and makes it completely fascinating for two hours. Visually nice, but sometimes a bit too kitschy with those bright colors. Then I prefer to see Ozu in black and white. 4.0*.

Fourth film I see by Ozu: twice a 4, twice a 4.5.

The man is quality and this time I especially admired him for the way he guides you through the family problems of some of the characters with a slightly humorous touch. A series of scenes that highlight the imperfection of people and situations, presented in a way that is also very visually enjoyable.
