Setsuko Hara is a mysterious actress who lets the pain seep through her smile. She remained unmarried all her life, a theme that was also discussed in Tokyo Story. As a Western viewer, it is difficult to form a truthful perspective on Japanese culture from the 1950s: as far as the male-female relationship and manners are concerned, I look with a conditioned view at a culture that deviates in this regard. . This conservative society with traditional manners and relationships that is about to disappear due to Western influence and a changing spirit of the times also took place here in our country around the same time. In Akibiyori the men choose from saké or whiskey, the advertisements are written in Japanese caricatures and in Western alphabet, the women are in kimono and the girls are dressed in Western dresses and walk on stiletto heels.

Ozu observes these social changes in a strict and conservative film framework. He stands in a Japanese art tradition in which an eye for harmony and proportion is central. Within his film frames, foreground and background are decisive, every piece of furniture is in the perfect place, just as every glass on the table is in the right place. Within this context, the actors move like parts of a Japanese composition and never look out of place.

The camera is sometimes on the axis, so that during dialogues I as a viewer am directly addressed by an actor. That's quite unusual, especially in modern times when the Hollywood rule is for the camera to be on one side of the 180 degree line. Unusual or not, what could be better than Setsuko Hara addressing you in this film?

In terms of content, a fascinating Ozu, which indeed resembles Late Spring in terms of content, but where Ozu also shows that 11 years later the country is really modernizing. The youth who do other things, but also start wearing Western clothing and no longer appear in kimono, where (young) women suddenly take the lead and where certain traditional customs such as marriage are less prominent.

But the film itself, perhaps because of this, also seems a bit dated. The film is typical Ozu, but somewhere I thought: well, you could have developed yourself. As if the style doesn't quite fit the content. And although there are plenty of nice characters walking around (and especially drinking), the pace is good and the film is often interesting, the film did not always attract me and keep my attention. 3.5*.

Ozu's films lie quietly in wait to grab you and move you every time. The title is reminiscent of his older works Late Spring, Early Summer and Early Spring. The film stands alone, but is made with the same approach. The season mainly refers to the period in the lives of the figures.

A late Ozu and in color even. Perhaps that is why the film is less known from his oeuvre? Personally, I think it is a bit inferior to his older films, but it can certainly be included in the list. I like his camera style that brings peace and observes everything like a modest witness. This way the dialogues and characters stand out a bit, enjoying the beautiful images.
