The Virgin Suicides plot

"Beautiful, mysterious, haunting, invariably fatal. Just like life."

The beautiful but mysterious Lisbon sisters live in a quiet and conservative town in 1970s America. When one of the girls takes her own life, she turns the life of the entire family upside down with this dramatic act. More and more the family shuts itself off from the outside world, until the girls are not even allowed to leave the house. While the boys next door make one last attempt to rescue the girls from their isolation, the situation escalates completely. Twenty-five years later, the boys still haven't forgotten the Lisbon sisters. Their fascination continues. They still try to reconstruct the enigmatic story behind the suicides on the basis of diary fragments and letters.

Atmospheric film, due to the appropriate cinematography and striking music. Yet there is something in the storytelling that is not right and I think that is the reason that the ending makes little impression. It is possible that the special perspective (as a result of which The virgin suicides directly betrays itself as a book adaptation, the films that dare to experiment with the perspective are also a rarity) is to blame: the group of partly anonymous boys who tell the story. reconstructing afterwards and forming a subjective narrative instance, that probably works less well in images than on paper. But despite these criticisms, a fine film and a worthy starting point for Sofia Coppola.

What kind of boring soft stuff this was to me. Very sleep-inducing film about a mega boring family and their environment. I thought, high score, there must be something to it, nothing for me anyway. I had expected a somewhat exciting drama that would affect me anyway, but I got nothing of that.

Seen it three times now, and although I like it more now than the first two times, I can't really get excited about this one. The adolescents all act well, the story is captivating, the atmosphere is hit and I have rewarded the soundtrack of Air with the full ***** on MusicMeter, but somehow it doesn't really grab me. Maybe that's because the psychological realism of the portraits of the sisters clashes so much with the somewhat caricatural approach of the parents: James Woods is normally a bundle of nerves and alert, but now plays a man who falls asleep sitting in front of a nature program, and Kathleen Turner plays a mother who doesn't understand that her presence at her daughter's party is not appreciated. Or she doesn't want to understand, that's also possible, but in any case I thought those two characters were too bold in the face of the emotionally intense drama of the five daughters, which was brought aloof by the voice-over.
