Like a story by John Irving, where the devil, his old nut and the kitchen sink are brought in. From one absurdity to another. Perhaps Hallstrom was inspired by his previous film adaptation of an Irving book to do something similar?

Nice cast, Cate Blanchett unrecognizable as the secret Petal, Judi Dench as the not quite tracking aunt, but also a lot of smaller roles of nice actors. Actually, Spacey is the only one I'm not that impressed with, he acts a bit flat and dull. Perhaps because the role demands it, but it is certainly not impressive.

The Shipping News was a gamble. Judging by director Lasse Hallström and the impressive cast, my interest was piqued.

I actually got pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. I wasn't really familiar with the story, but I was hoping for a relatively simple, albeit good, drama film with good acting. Ultimately, that's exactly how I can sum up the film. The whole thing takes some time to get going, but eventually turns into an entertaining whole. When the family travels to Newfoundland, there is immediately a somewhat grim atmosphere that remains for the rest of the film. The story is multifaceted and captivating. On the one hand you have of course the processing of the loss of Patel by both father and daughter, but the history of the Quoyles is also an interesting fact. There were also tense moments in the film.

The cast performs well. Kevin Spacey's role isn't one of his best, but he just did it in a way that makes you empathize with the main character and never really gets boring. Julianne Moore is sympathetic and the supporting roles of Rhys Ifans, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are also well filled. They're not all terribly interesting characters, but the plot events made me feel involved with them. The locations are also beautifully shot.

There is much interesting to mention about The Shipping News. The versatile plot is the main thing that appeals. Because there is quite a lot happening, I never got bored and the time flew by. I know it's not an arthouse here, but because everything wasn't brought so bombastic, it didn't feel like the typical Hollywood production. In the end I found this to be above average within the genre. A pleasant feature film, which is easily maintained by both cast and story.

3.5*

After his wife dies, a man takes his daughter and an aunt to remote Newfoundland. That's where their roots lie and they want to start over. It's also there where old family secrets resurface and many other stories. The film is quite captivating and generally has a beautiful and ominous atmosphere, although it can still be pleasant. The only real downside to the film is that there are too many stories in the film, and because of that the film lacks depth and a lot of it blows past out of nowhere to disappear just as quickly. And that while a lot of exciting things are happening. If I had to choose between a longer film or less but more in-depth stories in the film, I would choose the longer film. Or a miniseries. Because now it all flew by and suddenly there was the credits. I wish I could have enjoyed this movie longer.
