"A new day is dawning."
Nat Love is an outlaw whose parents were murdered years ago. He finds out that the man responsible for this is being released from prison. Out of revenge, Love decides to reunite his old gang to track down his enemy and carry out his revenge.

It seems as if the makers had a hard time choosing between comedy, drama or serious western and it didn't become it all. Maybe if you can see through the bad sets, bad outfits, ill-fitting music and mediocre acting, something interesting remains, but I really had to watch the film in stages because I thought it was all too bad.
The story is nothing but the standard revenge theme we've seen many times before (and better), only now with a completely black cast. Maybe that's why I don't belong to the target audience, but I really don't understand the hype of this film.
What is a classy actor like Idris Elba doing in this movie? I was really waiting for him to finally do his thing, but then the movie was over and I was still waiting. Zazie Beetz makes the film somewhat watchable, but otherwise certainly not recommended.

A western with a striking amount of colour. A town 'Whitetown' that is literally painted white. A colorful saloon with a blue body-painted dancer, a catfight in a dyer are some examples. It is clear that this is a conscious choice of style, just like bright rainbow colors work well for a children's party.
It is not surprising that a kind of Zwarte Piet discussion breaks out here on the forum, because almost the entire cast consists of African American actors. Not very common for a western. The reggae music under trotting horses underlines that we are not dealing with an ordinary western film. An attempt has been made to approach an exhausted genre in a completely different way and that, as far as I'm concerned, results in a refreshing Netflix original.
As a contemporary composer can draw from the oeuvre of his predecessors, all kinds of elements have been copied from classic westerns and mixed with modern influences. A comparison with films from QT is lurking here. The characters bear names of historical figures, that has little or nothing to do with the simple story. The story is a classic western theme: revenge, you don't have to worry about historical correctness.
I think it's an amusing movie. A bold and successful attempt at mixing styles. Nice music, great action, a touch of humor, visually very attractive. The film is long, fine for a dark winter evening. I don't really understand the low ratings here.
