The Great Commandment plot
All the people of Judea suffer from the policies of the emperor Tiberius and the excessive taxes imposed on them by the merciless Herod and the governor Pontius Pilate. On the basis of scriptures, zealot zealots predict the arrival of a king descended from David, who will free them from the yoke of Roman occupation. However, when the son of a carpenter from Nazareth is designated as the messiah, their disappointment is great: after all, they had expected a warrior who would defeat the Romans. Scribe Lamech, meanwhile, arranges a marriage between his son Zadok and Tamar, but it is his other son, Joel, who is actually in love with her.
