The Good Son plot
"Evil has many faces."
Young Mark (Elijah Wood) promises his seriously ill mother that he will not let her die. His mother dies anyway and Mark is taken to relatives a short time later by his father to spend several weeks with them. He can play with his nephew Henry (Macaulay Culkin), who is his own age, and younger niece Connie. Henry drags Mark into games that are sometimes dangerous but always amusing. Gradually it becomes clear to Mark that Henry is perverted and that he is capable of monstrous things. To the outside world, however, Henry keeps the mask of the exemplary boy.

I rarely come across movies like this one. Apparently people in general are not really waiting for these kinds of films. If you want to look beyond the character that the good kid who played Culkin in Home Alone and My Girl, then you are more likely to find this a good film. That Henry looks angelic is just as good. This makes it comparable to, for example, Rhoda from "The Bad Seed". Both think only of themselves, hardly show any emotions and can lie and manipulate like the best. The big sore point of the story is that Henry seems to have no motive for his misdeeds. He just seems to be doing it out of sheer amusement. Rhoda and the other bad kids don't want to be mean, unless someone becomes a nuisance in their eyes. The story, though simple, is well constructed. It started off well, but quickly escalated. The finale is a bit over the top but still satisfying. I was pleasantly surprised by Elijah Wood's character and also the mother. They play strong emotional roles.

Mediocre film in which a boy whose mother has died comes to live with his nephew for a while. A meager story in which the course is somewhat predictable and that never really gets exciting. Macaulay Culkin isn't exactly good, but he is entertaining as a little psychopath. Furthermore, the location (Maine) makes for some nice pictures. Just not 3.0 stars.
