It's easy to see why people describe this movie as rudderless, wooden, with bad actors and dialogue. On the other hand, everything about this movie is so "on the nose" that I have to struggle to understand such views, especially since they're kind of off the mark. Sounds more snob than I actually mean, sorry.

The actors are constantly busy with intonation and recitation. Most of them play a bigger role in "the big picture" and more often than not it is important "how" something is said and not "what". Language games full of sarcasm, dryness, irony and deeper layers.

A somewhat messy and strange elaboration of a simple story becomes a stepping stone for a life question for the audience. Everything is related to men and love. Telling how this film deals with that would immediately give away the gist of the film. Let it be quite clear that it is not presented very subtly and it can be seen in most key scenes.

A song like "Kool Thing" is used in such a way that it is an addition to "the big picture" and it is also one of the nicer scenes from the film. There are more moments like that, which ensure that you can hardly miss the message.

Funny and rather random detail is the surreptitious advertising that pops up rather harshly in the film. Did this have any meaning, or did Hartley just hire some sponsors? I'm guessing the latter

Funny, layered film, which apparently requires a lot of empathy from the viewer. So far I think this is the nicest I've seen from him and it's my 4th. Neck to neck race with "Trust".

I couldn't remember anything about this movie that I must have seen about 20 years ago. It probably didn't impress me too much at the time. However, a video clip with that dance scene made me decide to watch this film again. And, this time it certainly didn't disappoint me, although it has to be said that that great dance scene on the song Cool Thing by Sonic Youth was way above it. But yes, I just love these kind of dance scenes, of course with an attractive lady in the lead. I certainly didn't like that scene any less than the comparable scene from Godard's movie Bande à Part. For the rest it was quite enjoyable, especially when the ladies were handing out blows. Yes, I like whacking ladies as long as it's in a movie of course.

In brief; a nice atmospheric video this by Hal Hartley. I also have to check out his movie Trust. Also a wonderful soundtrack with tracks from Sonic Youth and Ya Lo Tengo, among others.

4.0*

Reasonable film in which two brothers look for their father who has escaped from the police. The somewhat strange, idiosyncratic tone of the film is again typically Hal Hartley. This is largely due to the off-beat dialogues. And while these are sometimes quite good, it does make the characters a bit aloof (the acting even goes a step on top of this). A narrow 3.0 stars.
