Good political satire, which may not even have been intended as satire at the time. The story is pretty straight forward and simple about two candidates vying for the senatorship. The performance is almost documentary-like, making the film look realistic. The satire is pretty subtle, which is certainly a plus, but which also makes it all a bit dry. Also a good role from Robert Redford.

The film shows the hollowness of politics, election campaigns in particular.

Certainly a good screenplay, but certain aspects are discussed several times, so that the film loses some tension and it is a bit long-winded.

Robert Redford is definitely a plus.

Politics is a touchy subject in a country divided into two blocs. In terms of content, the ideologies have changed little in half a century. The fictional slogans of that time resemble the real ones of today. Politicians are not judged by their ideas, but by their image. The media do not want thorough explanations, but short, useful quotes.

Robert Redford, with sideburns and a lavish hairdo, excels as the popular boy rolling into politics. He has to soften his progressive views in the course of the campaign. Peter Boyle plays the election strategist trying to mold him. Don Porter plays the sitting senator, who comes across as arrogant, but knows how to sell his conservative views well.

The screenplay is by Jeremy Larner, a journalist who also wrote speeches for Democratic Senator Eugene McCarthy. It is a political drama with a satirical content. The hectic and banality of such an election campaign are denounced.
