We don't know much about military court dramas, perhaps because the American government isn't interested in them at all. That makes Caine Mutiny a very daring subject at the time the film was made, because it was not done to expose the navy in such a way and not at all when it came to things like cowardice and panic. . The time the film came out wasn't exactly an example of timing either, the cold war was just getting into steam and McCarthy saw communists everywhere.

The film has some very strong roles, Van Johnson, Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer and Fred MacMurray.

The scenes at sea support the court scenes and they are of a high level in terms of acting, with every scene the emotion of that moment is palpable. Bogart is excellent as Queeg, the way he tackles the theft or the way he copes with the cyclone are in my opinion some of the best acting of his career. Unfortunately, this film is rarely shown on TV, but every time the film is shown, I go see it again.

In my opinion, power/authority is the common thread in this film. Not illogical since the film is set in the American navy, but the theme also continues in the love romance between Robert Francis and May Wynn, and the relationship with Robert's mother. That love story only seems to be dragged in because it's how it should be in Hollywood because it doesn't add anything to the plot.
It is the first time that I see Humprey Bogart play a character, atypical for his other films, with which he convincingly proves that he has more to offer than hard-boiled characters. He comes across as very unsympathetic and as a viewer you side with the mutineers, although towards the end you almost feel sorry for him again. Strongly played.
The music score is by Max Steiner, veteran composer and Oscar winner, so that's all right. Fine detail: in the beginning of the film May Wynn sings a song whose melody will recur for the rest of the film as a motif in every scene between Robert and May.
Genre-wise, this isn't one of my favorite movies. I mainly watched it because it was in my Bogart DVD box. But regardless of my taste, I think it's a well-made film, with strong acting.
Some here on the forum point out that the film appears to be propaganda for the US military, and it certainly is. At the end of the film, the mutineers still get a big blow from their own lawyer (Jose Ferrer), and this in a way that seems to be dictated by a ghost writer from the navy. So you have to take that into account. But has it ever been different in Hollywood?

I believe everything that is important to me has already been mentioned about this film. Like most, I also enjoyed this over 65 years old film. The only thing director Edward Dmytryk could have left out of the film in my opinion is the love affair between the main character Willy Keith and his May.

Maybe a little more war action instead?

Still an 8 as a rating!
