A swoon video. Anna is always fun to watch. This is not a high flyer. Still, the film gives a pleasant feeling. Didn't you see him. Then you don't miss much.

Franny [Anne Hathaway] has been cutting off contact with her family for some time now. She returns when her mother [Mary Steenburgen] informs her that Franny's brother Henry [Ben Rosenfield] is in a coma. Franny tries to regain some of her bond with her musically gifted brother by visiting the places where his diary says he liked to go. In doing so, she meets the popular singer/songwriter James Forester [Johnny Flynn], of whom Henry is a big fan. Sombre drama full of melancholy, often depressing songs that are a bit too similar, but at least make an attempt to justify the playing time. More of a character study than a good story, but that's still not a recommendation. Steenburgen occasionally manages to break the slump with some light-hearted moments, but the talented Hathaway and Flynn deserve a much better vehicle than this.

This one was on TV the other day and I fell into it after it opened. Although I was not immediately captivated, I noticed that I kept looking. The film has an almost hypnotic feel: a slow pace, quiet conversations about life and death, sensitive guitar music, beautiful images and fine lighting.

The film flows smoothly, but the story barely grabbed me. Too forced, and too predictable at crucial moments. I also thought it became too much of a repetition of scenes towards the end.

But it stayed with me, and some of the images and dialogue I can still recall weeks later. So somehow the film touched something in me.

3*
