Shane plot

"The Greatest Story Of The West Ever Filmed!"

The sinister Shane, a former gunfighter, becomes involved in a conflict between the powerful and ruthless rancher brothers Rufus and Morgan Ryker and the small farming families, including the Starretts. The Rykers prey on their land. Joe Starrett's young son Joey is deeply impressed by Shane. When Shane beats Chris Calloway, one of Ryker's men, after harassment, Morgan Ryker tries to make Shane work for him. Shane refuses that. Rather, he helps Joe Starrett and the small ranchers, so Morgan Ryker hires the infamous gunslinger Jack Wilson of Cheyenne. A bloody confrontation seems inevitable.

Powerful and also warm western/drama about self-sacrifice and togetherness, all this under the brilliant direction of George Stevens. I also liked the images and the acting, Heflin and Ladd are a well-balanced duo with Arthur and De Wilde in between Meyer was also very convincing as villain/rancher Ryker. And Jack Pance deserves extra mention as the icy and dreary gunslinger Jack Wilson (or should I say Phil Iron Wire). Wry that Ladd and De Wilde (Shane and little Joe) are so tragic their end came. Fortunately, they have been immortalized in this strong story that is a lot more current and has a lot more substance than you might initially think. Very good.

Was on TV this week!! A light-hearted, family western that is pleasant to watch and unpacks with positive values and beautiful landscape images that give the film a special atmosphere. A mysterious man, Shane arrives at a farming family where he offers himself to help. He soon wins the hearts of the Starrett family (especially the son), but they get into a fight with the selfish landowner Ryker.

It is somehow touching that a lot of characters are very sweet and sympathetic; even the village bully Calloway is going to warn Shane about a trap at some point . There is a good balance between the dramatic aspect of intimidation of farmers which leads to all sorts of tension, and the real western with a very spectacular cafe fight, "good and bad guys" are diametrically opposed (with a finale that can be guessed but... is postponed to the last minute). Despite little shooting and violence, it is still a fine western, but intended for a very wide audience.

PS: Still for a moment dwell on the horrific fate of Brandon DeWilde, who played the boy and died at the age of 30

PS2: Strikingly many voices; I didn't even know him.

Shane is set at a time of transition in the West. The large immigration is almost over, but is still experiencing its last convulsions, among others among the older generation, who think they have priority in the country for which they fought.

Certain plot elements are based on the Johnson County War of 1892 and may have contributed to the realism of the film. The emphasis is on the hard-working farmers who have to deal with dated thugs. Family Values/Christianity/Tradition vs. riffraff. And Shane? Alan Ladd as Shane is somewhere in between. He presents himself as a defender and advocate of the farmers but clearly has a past in an environment that is close to the underworld. As the hero and namesake of this film, I actually don't find Shane very interesting because he is quite inscrutable, so we never learn anything about his past and own desires. Although at the end a corner of the veil is lifted in the dialogue between Ladd and Emile Meyer (as Rycker). But that is amply compensated by the characters of Van Heflin, Cook Jr and others, as well as the bad guys of course. It is also striking that in this film there is no babe - excuse the use of words - which I am not used to from the average Hollywood film from that time. For Jean Arthur, it was her last film and she does a fine job as a housewife who is latently attracted to Alan Ladd. The fact that she was no longer the vamp of yesteryear in appearance only adds to the realism. Hollywood outdoes itself here.

All this is beautifully portrayed by George Stevens and cinematographer Loyal Griggs - the Oscar for cinematography must have been won for nothing - and (sometimes a bit too emphatically) supported by a beautiful score by Victor Young.
