"How do you break free without breaking apart?"
In the late 1950s, America is thriving. Frank and April Wheeler are a young, attractive and promising couple. They have two lovely children and live in an affluent suburb somewhere in Connecticut. But they are not happy, or even satisfied. Frank has a boring office job, April mourns a crippled career as an actress. Surely they were destined to be different, better? In a desperate attempt to escape their sluggish civilian life, they decide to go to France. Their special gifts will be able to develop in Europe, far from the superficial consumer society that America is in their eyes. Their relationship, however, gets bogged down in endless bickering and jealousy, and a drama seems inevitable.

It starts off well, but it just keeps repeating itself.

The American Beauty of the 50s. It is somewhat easy for Mendes to use the same theme, the boredom of suburban life, again, but to be honest, it has become a penetratingly good drama. You can't go wrong with acting guns like DiCaprio and Winslet. That other lady from the Titanic, Kathy Bates, had some interesting supporting roles along with her crazy son.

This is the type of movie that doesn't bore me for a minute and leaves me staring at the credits. This is of course my personal experience. When I thought back to what actually happened in the movie, besides the constant arguments , I could really only think of two things. The abortion April committed, which resulted in her death and 'the big fight' that took place the morning before April's death .
Despite its sparse plot, the film manages to evoke excellent compassion for both characters. This is partly because their backstory and partly because they seem to be trapped in their own character . Of course, the acting of Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet also helps.
I am not very familiar with Winslet's acting style, apart from a number of well-known films, but I think this film is very strong. And even after watching a lot of DiCaprio movies over the past few months, I've come to realize that to me he is one of the only actors who is so well known and at the same time can act so well. If you watch two of his films in the same afternoon, you seem to be watching a completely different actor. And time and again he plays his part masterfully.
