Rabbit-Proof Fence plot

"Follow Your Heart, Follow the Fence"

In the 1930s, Australian policy focused on taking half-blood children away from their Aboriginal mothers and rearing them elsewhere. Molly, Daisy and Grace soon manage to escape from the camp they end up in. They follow a fence thousands of miles long in a trek through the Australian outback in search of their mother. AO Neville, "Chief Protector of Aborigines", does everything he can to find the girls.

Strong drama.

The whole tragedy surrounding the kidnapping and re-education of Aboriginal children is strongly portrayed, partly due to the good acting of the three girls. In addition, the desolate Australian landscape is of course perfect for the most beautiful wide angle shots. There is not much story; the film mainly tells itself on the basis of the penetrating images.

For me, however, it is all a bit too scanty and too easy for a top ranking, especially because you are left with questions afterwards. What about the white fathers, for example? And if Aboriginal tribes also do not accept half-blood children, then that is at least as reprehensible, isn't it? Some further reading also shows that the makers have taken a nice walk with reality. Still gives me a bad aftertaste.

Purely good as a film, mediocre as a historical document. 3.5*

Not genocide, but still a terrible curtailment of freedom, again within the context of colonization. Impressive performances by the 3 children in this gripping, true story. Very nice visuals and special sound effects that accentuate the dramatic. Degrading title.

If only they would understand what we are trying to do for them

A more than special yet modest drama that focuses mainly on the three children, but also draws attention to serious misdeeds against the Aboriginals. Because as Mr. Devil himself explains at one point, 'placing' the children is not much different than a pre-cooked breeding program with the intention of getting their blood out of the gene pool.

The film excels in atmosphere and especially the music that constantly contains a certain threat but also harbors something mystical, the latter is underlined by the 'singing' at the end but the intuitive gifts of the tracker. The children seem quite touching and they play more than fine with the versatile nature and of course the film contains the necessary drama. Especially the scene in which the children are taken away is very insistent with the panic of the women and the old woman who, out of sheer impotence, is going to beat herself with a stone..

The end of the film with the real images of Molly and Daisy is pure, the caption to cry because of what is still happening is afterwards and the end result is an impressive film that does quite a bit for me.
