It is the excellent cast that wins this remarkable film over the line.

His costumes, atmosphere and sets are very good, it is the actors, Rush and Winslet in the lead, who give the actions and the dialogues a special dimension in a film that, in addition to the "offensive literature", wants to say something about faith. .

Well, that the actors speak English instead of French is one of the last comments I have about the film. For a film about Marquis de Sade, where the word sadism comes from, I thought the film was quite… well behaved. The lyrics aren't really that exciting. Now I've never read anything by him, but I do assume that de Sade could have done better. The first half hour is very slow and quite boring. Gradually it gets better and it all comes to life. It is, however, that the characters and especially the environment are poorly used. You can see the patients, but in my opinion they could have been a lot crazier and then given more attention. In other words, the madness was nowhere to be found. Geoffrey Rush, on the other hand, is the right person to play the Sade and does so with gusto. Fascinating to see the Sade sink further and further away. Also Michael Caine (although his role and that of his wife adds little) and Kate Winslet do an excellent job. Joaquin Phoenix even does very poorly as a mouse.

Again, I miss the excesses. They're in it and it gets better towards the end, but it's like it's about some random porn writer. The subplot doesn't matter, but there is something beautiful to see.
