Model Shop plot

"Maybe Tomorrow. Maybe Never. Maybe."

George Matthews is a young man who has a bittersweet affair with a French woman in Los Angeles. While he waits to be drafted into the military, it is impossible for him to bond with anyone, including his girlfriend Georgia. In the meantime, he tries to raise money to prevent his car from being impounded. George is attracted to Lola, a French woman who works in a modeling agency specializing in pin-up models. George spends his last money getting a picture of her, and he discovers she's just as unhappy as he is. Though Lola doesn't respond well to George, their brief night of love gives them enough strength to deal with their individual problems.

The recently released Blu-ray release by Arrow Academy makes this film a viewing party with an enchanting Anouk Aimée and a somewhat comparable melancholic atmosphere as in Les Parapluies de Chèrbourg, but then in a completely different environment. I played the disc twice in a row.

This film follows the story of Gary Lockwood as a young man who doesn't feel good about himself in LA in the late sixties. Visually a feast for the eyes but still a film with a slightly depressing undertone, with a kind of theme that would also manifest itself in American cinema in the years that followed.
Gary Lockwood meets none other than Anouk Aimée, the main character in Lola (1961) , Demy's debut film. Model Shop contains numerous references to this film, although it is certainly possible to watch the two films separately. Photography plays a role in the relationship between Gary and Anouk, distant voyeurism is the surrogate for a truly profound relationship. A theme that was previously addressed in sixties films such as Peeping Tom and La Prisonnière by Demy's compatriot Clouzot.

The storyline is engaging enough to keep your attention, supported by the beautiful photography of LA in 1968. Very sixties. Pop culture is also addressed, with the entrance of the Californian hippie band Spirit, who also provide part of the film's soundtrack. And we also catch a glimpse of the generational conflict and fuzz surrounding the Vietnam War. The film's ending is somewhat parallel to the ending of Lola, and so the circle is completed. The film flopped in its time, but in my opinion it is still enjoyable to watch.

An hour long very nice atmospheric portrait of the city of LA. Pleasant pace, beautiful images and especially a lot of atmosphere. Nicely flowing and very nice to watch. Then comes more drama and the focus goes from events to drama and psychology and that was all much less interesting. On balance still sufficient but with an unpleasant aftertaste. 3.0*.
