"Love in the times of the Apocalypse"

Warsaw, summer 1944. Stefan takes care of his mother and younger brother because his father, an officer in the Polish army, was killed during the invasion of Poland in 1939. He promised his mother not to get involved in the battle, but meanwhile he dreams of fulfilling his duty to his homeland. He eventually joins the resistance. Together with Kama, Góral, Rogal and Beksa, under the command of the charismatic Kobra, he forms one of the bravest resistance armies during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

A large-scale war film about the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Some time is taken for an introduction and you also get to know the main character somewhat. It takes a while before the film really takes off. But when it comes loose, it goes well. Hard, raw and emotional. There are plenty of scenes that stand head and shoulders above the rest: such as the liquidation of Stefan's mother and brother, the explosion after which the blood and pieces of skin fall from the sky and, for example, that an injured Pole is lying on his sickbed. detonates a hand grenade to take out a German with his lover . The action sequences are very good, and so are the many explosions and bombings. The impact of a bullet or an explosion in which people are flung away has also been depicted very strongly.
The film surprised me quite a bit and the full running time (despite the fact that the film was built up quite slowly) I had a great time. The only downsides were the slow motions during some scenes, and a soundtrack that was not always that good.

Miasto 44

Strong war movie. Miasto 44 shows how the Polish resistance against the Nazis took shape, and director Jan Komasa explicitly shows the madness and horror of the war. Some scenes are nauseating, but the images of bombed Warsaw are also impressive.

The film does have a somewhat strange combination of gruesome war scenes and some love scenes that seem to come straight out of a video clip. Artistically done, but the contrast with the horrors of war is great. Maybe it was Komasa's intention to show that, but it doesn't come across very well. But as a war film dripping with cynicism and tragedy, Miasto 44 is an impressive film experience.

Strong.

Indeed a bit of a teenage story during the war, but one that is therefore not good and manages to be very gruesome. This was just about the first Polish film I get to see and with that they actually immediately show that they can do something.

The least about the film for me is the leading role, which is played by a slightly too boring and wooden Pawłowski. The film is also sometimes just a little too implausible to deliver an optimal impact. A bit too sweet dialogues that the film loses itself in sometimes.

But otherwise this is a strong, hard war film. There is little braking and after half an hour some bizarre horrors follow quickly, some of which are very memorable. The blood rain for example.

Moreover, the film sometimes manages to set a decent tone and despite the fact that it is sometimes a bit sweet, the images are absolutely not. The devastated Poland is impressively portrayed and sometimes a skilful slow-motion moment suddenly comes into play. It doesn't always fit in, but it is often very nice.

There is a lot of action in it, and sometimes quite exciting. In addition, the emotion sometimes works really well. Especially when the boy is shot in the leg at the end and then trampled to death by soldiers, after saying he will be 19 in a few hours. The murder of Pawłowski's family is also hard.

A special war film, which passes quickly and manages to be quite gruesome and has memorable moments. I was not really bored for a moment, and I also thought the film looked very good. Definitely a better one in the genre for me.
