In 1809 the story of the murder of the revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat is staged. It takes place in a mental institution and the writer is the institution's most famous resident, the Marquis de Sade. The actors in the play are also all psychiatric patients. The main element of the piece is a dialogue between de Sade and Marat about the true meaning of revolution, and about how it should be done.
