Good sequel, but didn't appeal to me as much as Dogville.

This is mainly because this film is a socially critical film even more than Dogville. Certainly interesting to follow, not that, but the mysterious and abstract of Dogville, which appealed to me so much, is now largely gone. Manderlay takes a much more real stance.

Visually it is often beautiful and stylized, but also in that area slightly less than its predecessor. As mentioned above, the lighting is a bit less, and this film is a bit darker and more monotonous in terms of look, which was a shame.

So much for the negatives, because otherwise the film is very similar to Dogville, which I gave 5*, and therefore many of the things that made Dogville so good for me are also in it, just a little less. 3.5*.

I saw Dogville years ago and thought it was okay because of the unique style. Manderlay continues that same theatrical style exactly and again I found it somewhat uncomfortable in the beginning but also found it interesting again. In doing so, Lars von Trier addresses subjects in a rather radical manner and position. You have to pull that off and not give it too much of an offense. Anyway, it gives something to think about.

Anyway, Grace has in mind that a community can be made and has the noble ambition to take a plantation where slavery still prevails in practice to a higher level. After a while, the black workers who live and work there should be able to live a free life in America. That is not without a struggle and it is also quite humiliating for her, how it all goes. That whole process of how Grace handles that and what she encounters is explained quite well during the film. Solid ample for this film .

Got a dent.

But that was somewhat to be expected. It was my last rated 4.5* film, Dogville had already lost a half on revision and even the first time I noticed that it was a fairly tight copy of Dogville.

And since at Dogville the masterly was already a bit off, I had already raised my expectations a bit. And rightly so, because although Manderlay is certainly not bad, it is in everything less than its predecessor and I even had some trouble to keep my attention on it.

Howard is slightly less than Kidman, the structure is too transparent after Dogville, the ending lacks a bit less punch and the whole race thing was still fairly innovative, but I'm starting to get tired of that song now.

Still a lot of good things to report. Acting remains strong, the visual set-up is fairly unique, for a plot- and character-driven film that smoothly exceeds 120 minutes it is rarely boring and the ending may have lost some power, it still remains a solid turn.

But brother Dogville unfortunately gets in the way of this film. Everything a little better there, so completely off for this one. If von Trier ever makes his third part, it will have to be a bit fresher.

3.5*
