La Terra Trema plot
After World War II, Ntoni returns to his hometown of Aci-Trezza, a poor fishing village in Sicily. He claims that the village would be better off uniting to be its own boss than being constantly exploited by the big corporations. However, implementing this idea turns out to be more difficult than he thought.

In 1948, Luchino Visconti provided a neo-realistic portrayal of the life of fishing families in Sicily, with only non-professionals as actors. Spoken in dialect, which is impossible to make sense of. The film marked an unprecedented break with what was considered cinema until that moment.

On a big screen at KINO, you rarely get that opportunity with a classic in these parts outside EYE. Fascinating to look at a textbook example of neorealism that is so cleverly framed and staged. It once again shows that realism is a complex term, here specifically ingrained in a post-war art movement. Important elements are the language (the dialect of the Sicilians), the registration on location and the use of non-professional actors. By the way, I'm still looking for a better designation for that last 'category'.
Visconti's sympathy for the working class acquires just a little too much gravitas towards the end when the underlying ideology is made explicit and the voice-over continues to guide the images. Fortunately, at that point my appreciation for this film was already at a high level.

Last month I saw two more films by Luchino Visconti: Rocco ei Suoi Fratelli and La notti blanche. By far his most neo-realistic film that reminded me a bit of Vittorio De Sica. Visconti tries to approach authenticity by working solely with non-actors. That works out pretty well. The fishermen he spoke to only had to play fisherman. The drama (sometimes quite theatrical) will then come naturally.
A very positive picture is not painted of fishing life. Existence is harsh and unforgiving. It will certainly not make you rich and the housing in the fishing village is also meager. Ntoni then decides to try it on his own, against what we would today call the capitalist system. The power of numbers, the power of the masses, at least, that is what we strive for if you want to achieve change. You are presented with a very socialist labor view of what is happening.
Quite interesting, although at times it just ripples along. Not always interesting, which made it a long session. 160 minutes is not too little and the message could certainly be delivered shorter and therefore more powerful.
