Grand but not compelling. The story is also like it, you really have to bring such a story as an epic. Visually this is delightful, both with the colors (during that ball scene) and the beautiful images of nature and sometimes a finely sliding camera (in that church). But this thing lasts well over 3 hours, and actually there isn't even a whole lot of narration in the scenes we see. Some scenes are especially stretched. And the acting is a bit distant, so I as a viewer had little to sympathize with, and then length really starts to work against it. Despite all the good points, the film is simply a bit boring more often than not. 3.0*.

interesting exposure of a piece of Italian history, but unfortunately not very compelling for me to really catch on. Possibly also because some things are not clear to me. Politics and other themes are closely and complexly intertwined so that it is difficult for me to untangle their subtleties within the Italian unification around 1860. The film probably also contains a lot of symbolism. In that ball scene, which by the way is very drawn out, it becomes clear that the aristocracy of blue blood will have to make way for the republic.

Il Gattopardo is largely supported by the handsome role of Burt Lancaster. Visconti has a great eye for detail and the period of two fault lines between political changes and traditions. The social and societal contradictions are clearly visible, although it is not always easy to follow due to a lack of knowledge.

Three hours, on the other hand, is a tall order, but the love Visconti has put into it is very noticeable.

Beautiful cinema by Visconti about the decline of the old nobility during the run-up to the unification of Italy (the Risorgimento). Visually in particular, this is a true example of authentic cinema, in which the echo of faded glory resounds through dilapidated palazzos. When I see a film like Il Gattopardo, then I suddenly find the current cinema of inferior quality. The camera caresss about the landscapes, takes the time to show domestic and village scenes and to show the emotions on the faces. And then those mass scenes with an incredible eye for detail... who can do that anymore? Visconti does this with masterly ease. Lancaster is a strange casting choice.. why not a real Italian in the lead? Delon is more appropriate here as a heart thief.

The long ball scene at the end made the film a bit disproportionate, and the plot consists not of twists or tall stories but of a slow awareness of a man confronted with changing social relationships around him. That makes the film somewhat languid and dragging, but also quite complex to grasp. That's why not a super high score, but it is a film worth watching as a period drama
