La Fièvre Monte à El Pao plot
When the governor of a prison colony is assassinated, his secretary, Ramón Vasquez, takes over until a successor is appointed. Vasquez is an idealist who wants to improve the lot of the prisoners. He also begins an affair with Inés, the governor's widow. When the new governor arrives, it soon becomes apparent that he does not share Vasquez's ideas. He threatens Vasquez with arrest unless Inés becomes his mistress. Meanwhile, the prisoners are preparing a major uprising.

Politics, passion and idealism are the ingredients in this film that is not exactly convincing because of the long-windedness, the complicated plot and the fact that the main characters are not so immediately susceptible. For example, Gérard Filipe and Jean Servais, although two French cracks, seemed to play a rather unreal role.
