Geremia, a 70-year-old man, earns his living as a loan shark. His appearance is just as bad as his character, but Geremia himself has the idea that he is an honest and sociable person. He thinks he is actually helping families borrow money and in that way interfere in their lives as an enforced 'friend of the family'.

The main character is one of the most insufferable characters I have ever seen in a movie. Not so much the greatest villain, but someone who has no good qualities and also lacks any charisma and is just annoying. Someone you would want to avoid at all costs in real life. This character is the film's main weakness, but also perhaps its strongest point. It is interesting to see such a nauseous man busy, but on the other hand you are stuck with it for the entire playing time and compassion is completely impossible. I mainly watched to see him go down. No idea if Sorrentino saw him as tragic, but I don't.
The film style here is remarkably praised. Well, I saw a lot of beautiful shots, but it wasn't that special overall, was it? A striking number of good shots were quickly cut off. I had the impression that the DVD quality was much too dark, which may also have contributed to the fact that not everything came across well. The whole thing has a recognizable style, but it only worked sporadically for me. The music was very strong, although the main tune seemed strangely familiar to me.

What wonderful films Sorrentino makes. (Audio) Visually a pleasure. It grabs your attention from the first second and contains outrageous scenes. The whole approach of making such an unsympathetic man the protagonist is refreshing, although this is of course not the first time. He also doesn't go through a mandatory bit of character development, rather the characters around him. Sorrentino clearly has no hesitation, goes all out and produces fireworks in many scenes.
Interesting content, but there could have been more to it. The premise is not fully realized. It doesn't dig deep enough and the film ends up in a con film of which we have already seen 100s. This certainly deserves 4 stars, I think the film is way too good to give it a lower rating.

Just like Conseguenze, very beautiful images. And perhaps a little more integration with the sound - the soundtrack certainly impresses me more. The story may be a bit more difficult, but it is much more of a puzzle to find out what exactly the motive could be and where Sorrentino wants to go with it. In that respect, clearly something between Conseguenze and Youth.
And also superbly cast and directed actors - although I must say that I like Rizzo a little less than Servillo, but that could also be due to his unsympathetic role. Nevertheless, played very well. It's actually a shame about the twist that was all too clearly felt.
