Scorsese once again shows his versatility as a director with an entertaining tribute to the Dalai Lama and his flight from Tibet. With grandiose sets and atmospheric costumes, the illusion is sketched that it actually takes place in and around that region, the greater the surprise that it was filmed in Morocco. In that respect it is simply a very clever film that convincingly depicts its own dream world and thereby sketches an impression of the glorious history of an important historical figure. It's a bit on the one-sided side, though, as complicated political situations are reduced to simply good and bad in the Hollywood way. Dalai Lama is the sublime good and the evil Chinese are the absolute evil.

Biographical, historical and interesting because of the doings around a Dalai Lama and the relevant religious practices.

Surprisingly such a theme for filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who is much more known for (bloody) gangster films...

Read something on the generic of "dedicated to my mother"...

In any case, a nice image, but unfortunately a bit too long-winded.

Recorded in Morocco.

Long sit. The splendor of Tibet is extensively discussed. The story is told well and calmly. The Dalai Lama is played nicely, but the great Chinese leader steals the show. Scorsese fails to provide insight into Tibetan Buddhism. The film doesn't really go much deeper than the well-known principle of non-violence. In doing so, he misses a huge opportunity because that Buddhism makes the story of Tibet exceptional. What remains is a dry record; a cinematic historiography that sheds light on things rather one-sidedly. For example, Tibet before the Chinese invasion is portrayed rather sweetly, while the Tibetans led a real reign of terror. But yeah. Americans and the truth.
