Idi i Smotri plot
In a forest in Nazi-occupied Belarus, young Russian Florya Gaishun (Aleksei Kravchenko) finds a rifle and immediately joins the local freedom fighters. This is despite pleas from his mother, who is now left defenseless with her two daughters. When Gaishun is later left behind by the military, he tries to return home, but the Nazis plan to bomb his village.

A thump in my face.
Gosh, I've never been so impressed by a war drama. I mean, movies like Schindler's List were pretty strong, but it didn't take a hit. However, I got plenty of it here. Also really great acting by that 12-year-old boy. Filmed very intensely too.
The movie started off slow, and felt a bit old, but all of that changed in the second half. Beautifully acted by Kravchenko, but Mironova also deserves credit. The film is very realistic and quite brutal towards the end. the massacre in the village is a real blow
The ending left me really quiet. However, the whole room was quiet where I was in, which is a great compliment. Rarely seen such a beautiful, raw and realistic war film. Nice to see this on the big screen. Not the full blow because some conversations felt a bit strange. Especially in the beginning.

A "beauty" of an impressive war film about the misery that washed over Russia and its inhabitants during the Second World War.
Because I was very interested in the former "Eastern Bloc" in the past, with this kind of information and personal visits to these countries, I was able to form a good opinion (I hope) about their view and ideas about the "West". With that I also came to the conclusion that 'they' feared 'the West'.
Napoleon, the first world war, the second world war were still fresh in the collective memory.
This film shows very well how the Germans left entire villages and farms in the flames, the scorched earth tactic. Horror and fear dominate the story, but the humor that is characteristic of this people also appears in the film.
What sometimes irritated me is the poetic speech of some, but that seems to be typical for Russian films. (sometimes).

I understand they used real ammunition for this movie? wow! Saw it about a month and a half ago, but haven't posted yet. Although I have written very few reports on films in recent years (and certainly no reviews at all), I will make an exception for this masterpiece.
Where to start? It had been on my wish list for a long time, until I found out that it is available on DVD (and therefore also Blu-ray as mentioned above) with Dutch subtitles. For years I was under the misconception that there was no official Dutch release.
You literally see the little boy Florya getting older during the film (at the end he even has gray hair from all the horrors he has experienced). Really nicely done, I understood that she was also a few years filmed, or I must be wrong?
The horror that Florya and Glasha have to endure is hard to imagine for us (let me keep it to myself, at least for me).
Everything was more than fine; the camera work, the acting, the story and screenplay etc.
Further supported by music by Wagner, Aleksandrov, Strauss and especially the piece "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's "Requiem".
A big fat 5*, and there are very few war films that reach that level with me.
