When 25-year-old Joan Webster and wealthy Sir Robert Bellinger want to marry, he rents the Scottish island of Kiloran, where the couple will be officially married. Bad weather, however, forces her to interrupt her journey on the Isle of Mull, where she meets naval officer Torquil MacNeil. The two hang out in anticipation of better weather, leaving Webster to doubt her impending marriage.

An entertaining film, but it's also the kind of film I wanted to like more than I actually did. It's genuinely very likable, with appealing characters you can't help but love. Yet, the film didn't really make an emotional impact on me. Perhaps the plot was a bit too predictable (it's the Scottish version of It Happened One Night). Perhaps there were some scenes that slowed down the pace (and the whirlpool scene has unfortunately aged considerably). I don't know, but I didn't find it as brilliant as I should have. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a feel-good film.

My compliments to the actors, who are all fantastic, and the sometimes beautiful visuals we've come to expect from The Archers. However, I think this is the weakest of the three films I've seen from them so far.

Three of the last four writers here have mentioned that the Archers have indeed made better films. Okay, let's make that "four out of five," because I also think the Archers have made better films (obviously, since another Powell/Pressburger film is number one in my top 10), but not many, and not much better either, because this is a minor masterpiece with a simple but effective plot, beautiful shots in the same locations, and especially two wonderful, small but very well-acted and deeply moving leading roles. And Roger Livesey must have the most beautiful voice in film history.

The Powell/Pressburger duo guarantees interesting films. A Matter of Life and Death is a real winner, and The Red Shoes is also quite good. Although I didn't entirely enjoy Black Narcissus, it's still a remarkable film.

This "I Know Where I'm Going!" isn't exactly a hit, but it does have some good points that make it worth watching. It's especially atmospheric because of everything that happens on the island. The frequent fog, the storm at sea, the Scottish landscapes and its castles... it all makes for a pleasant and atmospheric film, and the scene where they brave the storm in the boat looks very good too.

Only, the romance between Joan and Torquil lacks some spice. Joan may be the stubborn go-getter who doesn't display all her emotions, but the ending, where they kiss goodbye, didn't really feel believable.
