I read somewhere 'Before Sunrise but under the influence of vodka' and that's not a bad description. A semi-romantic story on a train of two people who meet by chance. But Compartment no. 6 has less romance and the necessary drama. Yet they are two fascinating figures, each on their way to their future. At first glance, the two are far apart and even though we don't get to know that much, they figuratively shake each other awake during the journey. Ready for the future, even if it's not what they dreamed of. They support each other to continue with new courage and warmth. Beautiful film where you are close to the main characters as a viewer. Where the cold harsh Russia meets the burgeoning warmth that grows little by little in the characters.

I already described the film Toivon Tuolla Puolen (2017) by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki “like a vodka that warms the heart in a cold, lonely night” and actually I want to describe this film – again from a Finnish director – in the same way so that this type of film seems like a Finnish trademark. In this case, a young woman travels alone from Moscow to Murmansk and both her psychological desolation and her desolation in a hostile, empty, icy landscape are almost palpable, where any other person encountered can be both welcome friend and mortal enemy, but in the bitterness of the situation reveals a warmth hidden. The story has little to say, but because the situation is always a bit threatening where the danger does not always come from where you expect it, you stay focused (although the film is sometimes a bit too slow) and the emptiness turns out to be to enable a deep 'real' human contact that is not defined by externalities such as status, social environment or prejudices. In addition, the film confirms the wisdom that it is not about the destination but about the journey towards it: it is the adventure in which life reveals itself.

A small pearl, which gives off strong Claire Denis vibes on the visual side. I was particularly impressed with the editing. The highlight of the movie for me was the moment after Laura lost her camera. Then there is the transition to a shot of the snowy track as it slowly slides away behind the train: goosebumps. Also fine actors, especially Yuriy Borislov. He sometimes reminded me a bit of 'Stalker'? A few very nice scenes, like with the grandmother and especially of course the moment of kiss offer a counterbalance to the sometimes too emphatic construction of motifs (the 'Voyage' number for example). Hutti Nro 6 after all plays nicely with your expectations and only in retrospect did I understand that Lyokha initially sincerely mistook her for a sex worker who goes to the mining area to earn money. This is not sexism, it says something about the great social difference between the two. It is these things that make the film substantively sincere. With the beautiful design, I end up with a small four.
