Nice look behind the scenes of Psycho.

While no one had faith in the film, Hitchcock just persevered.

The film zooms in further on the relationship troubles of Hitch and his wife Alma. Nice to see that the film censors thought it was absolutely inappropriate to show a flushed toilet in a movie.

It's 1959 and after the huge success of North by Northwest, director Alfred Hitchcock wants to change tack. His wife Alma Reville [Helen Mirren], who was closely involved in every Hitchcock film, gives him the book 'Psycho' by Robert Bloch. Alma may dismiss it as a thrill-seeking penny novel, but Alfred sees it as a major challenge to turn this into a masterpiece. However, with no major studio venturing into the grisly story based on the gruesome crimes of serial killer Ed Gein [Michael Wincott], Alfred and Alma decide to produce the film themselves. While Alfred flirts with Janet Leigh [Scarlett Johansson], Alma works independently on a project with writer Whitfield Cook. Hopkins caricatures 'The Master of Suspense' in this unbalanced biographical drama that has an amusing prologue and epilogue based on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and features both Johansson and James D'Arcy (as Anthony Perkins who role Norman Bates plays in Psycho) are exquisitely chosen. However, Gervasi isn't quite sure what to do with Hitchcock's alleged obsession with his (much younger) actresses. The ending, although similar to Hitchcock's words when he received the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 1979, does seem a bit strange and forced. And it is never superfluous to say that Mirren is sublime.

Mediocre.

The first half hour is quite light and also easy to look away. The theatrical rendition by Anthony Hopkins doesn't do much for me, but Helen Mirren offers good resistance. After that, unsurprisingly, the film gets a bit more serious when Hitch's inner struggle or the marital troubles start to surface. The film does not excel in that and despite the limited running time it certainly feels long enough. What the film does do well is that I got the urge to see some more of Alfred Hitchcock. If only because it "must" as a film lover.

2.5
