Underrated film in which Spike Lee gives depth to conventional sports drama by making some striking observations about American culture (particularly the immense importance that universities attach to their sports clubs). In addition, he captivatingly portrays the turbulent father-son relationship. The subplot with Jovovich, on the other hand, is rather pointless and superficial.

“I pray you understand why I pushed you so hard! It was only to get you to that next level, Son.”

Spike Lee delivers another interesting drama film. He Got Game lacks a raw edge and Jesus Shuttlesworth is a very Christian character (he really doesn't do anything wrong), but the film makes an impression because of the story and the strong acting.

Washington is outstanding as always and it's nice to see a young Rosario Dawson at work. Ray Allen made the right choice not to pursue an acting career, but he certainly isn't doing badly. The music is very atmospheric one moment and very bombastic and distracting the next. The film lacks some venom, but is a fascinating spectacle due to the direction by Lee and the actors.

Best Spike Lee movie since X, Do The Right Thing and Summer of Sam.

I'm a big NBA fan so also a fan of this kind of genre. Blue Chips, Above The Rim, White Men Can't Jump, Coach Carter, Glory Road are also other recommendations.

Of course you are going to watch this movie in the first place for the game, how basketball can be represented as a sport and also culture. Not the same as White Men, but more close to Blue Chips. How college or high school prospects are tempted with all kinds of perks to jump straight to the pros (or a big college).

For really pure streetball you just have to see White Men Can't Jump, but this film is simply a must-see as a basketball fan.

1 of my favorite Spike Joints.
