Do the Right Thing plot

"It's the hottest day of the summer. You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can …"

It's the hottest time of year in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In this mostly black neighborhood, Sal, an Italian immigrant, has been running a successful pizzeria with his sons Pino and Vito for years. Pino, however, is a racist and a troublemaker. For example, he is constantly annoyed that his father gives the local drunkard Mayor his daily dollar for cleaning the sidewalk. In fact, Pino would like to pocket that money himself, but without taking up the broom...

Fucking great movie.

This movie is so fucking good for so many reasons. The fucking colorful atmosphere with a fucking good red style that paints a fucking fantastic portrait of a black neighborhood in fucking Brooklyn of the 80's. The fucking characters play a fucking wonderful game. In few other fucking movies do I see an anti-racist message conveyed so fucking well as in this one. Unlike fucking whining and emotional music, this fucking movie just kicks you in the balls and confronts you with the fucking racist and edgy society of an American neighborhood.

The fucking smooth, sketch-like story unfolds using the main characters' fucking experiences. Not everyone in the neighborhood is happy with the fucking pizzeria and they don't put their opinion in fucking corners either. All this fucking discontent and hypocritical attitude towards the pizzeria eventually leads to the fucking unexpected climax. And if you weren't a little bit fucking moved by this event, I don't think you have a fucking heart.

Fucking great movie!

PS: there is a lot of swearing in the movie

I saw the 4k restoration in the cinema yesterday. Looked very nice. The visual style of the film is really great. I'm a huge fan of the playful camera angles and the camera that slowly slides past the sweaty heads of the main characters.

What is especially striking is how very topical the film is. Racism is something for everyone and all times. And the question of whether using violence is "the right thing" to solve institutional racism is more than relevant today.

A big 5* and maybe a place in my top 10.
