After the impressive 678 (2010) about sexual intimidation in the Muslim world, director Diab returns with another intense film, this time about the tensions between the fanatical supporters and opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the violent intervention of the police, who “conveniently” tar everyone and everything with the same brush.

The entire film takes place inside a police van! The penetrating camerawork and clever editing create an eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere, in which emotions and contradictions run high. A very special, sometimes oppressive viewing experience.

Diab himself was deeply involved in the Egyptian revolution. This is only his second film. I hope there will be more to come.

Film that takes place from a police truck filled with arrested demonstrators and others, and which convincingly illustrates how different political views can lead to extreme fanaticism and from there to madness, with ultimate dramas that are impossible to predict.

A feat of strength by the crew to pull this off and to provide an atmospheric and emotional image of how things were going inside and outside the car and how more and more problems and conflicts arise. After all, it is also very human, because the heated heads also find the time to think and it is a beautiful significant scene when, after one of them played the joker, they seem to realize how foolish they actually were and are. Unfortunately, it is the hysteria of violence that gets the upper hand...

Beautiful and special film, which rightly qualified for the Certain Regard Prize in Cannes.

Oppressive and claustrophobic film about citizens with conflicting political opinions who are locked up in a police van. The film has a very documentary feel and gives an uneasy feeling of the fear and tension that prevails in the van. The dense camera shots make you feel the intensity and uncertainty of the characters, especially as the film progresses.

At times very chaotic, but that was perhaps the intention. It becomes completely creepy when an army of protesters comes towards you. You soon realize that you can hardly talk yourself out of it and on the other hand you feel connected to the other prisoners in the van.

The characters may be quite stereotypical, but that didn't bother me too much. Editing and camera work are certainly on a high level despite the chaos.
