After seeing I Saw the Devil I decided to give this one a try. I've wanted to see it for a while, but the fact that Jee-woon Kim was behind it was an extra motivation to watch it now. And I am not disappointed, what a wonderfully hard film this has become!

A Bittersweet Life opens with an entertaining scene in which we are introduced to the violent Sun-woo. A Korean with a short fuse, but with his heart in the right place. Again a strong piece of acting by Byung-hun Lee who also played the stars of heaven in I Saw the Devil. When he lets the couple in love go, he suddenly ends up in shit and dozens of gangsters are after him.

Then we see a number of rock-hard scenes in which the blood flows abundantly. Good to see that for once there is no mercy, but just stop talking and put things in order. Visually, the film is quite dark, ideal to reinforce the depressive pit in which Sun-woo sinks further and further.

At first glance it is a standard revenge story, but Jee-woon Kim gives that little bit extra to make it something special. Beautiful emotions every now and then and a good crime film where time flies by.

Aah delicious Korean action, they can usually do something about it, love it. The film starts immediately, does not need a reconnaissance round fzo and does not waste any time to fire some action at the viewer, with that wonderful Korean atmosphere and attitude, really thumbs and fingers licking.
