Melodramatic film with many battles.

That's the best way to call this Brotherhood of War. As only South Koreans can. I have a soft spot for it. The bond between the two brothers is very convincing. Also gets through the opening scenes before being sent to the front. Also nice to see how both develop in the army. Unfortunately, the relationship sometimes seems to be snowed under in the many action scenes that the film has. The director doesn't seem to know exactly what he wants to say. How bad the war was or how families are torn apart. Later on, the film picks up again and there is another great ending. That last scene might go a bit too far, but it conveys the emotional charge that the film wants to convey very well.

Jang Dong-gun plays great here. He knows how to convey so many emotions convincingly. But Bin Won is also very strong like his brother. That this man will not be offered more roles. Very good actor. The rest is a bit rare, but everyone plays their part well. Also nice to see Choi Min-sik pass by.

South Korean films are no longer inferior to the major Hollywood productions. Occasionally the difference in budgets is of course visible, especially in the airplane scene, but otherwise everything looks great. Beautifully choreographed action scenes. Camera work is of a very high level and less conventional than in the big American productions, the direction is good, effects look fantastic. This just looks and sounds like a multi-million dollar movie.

Impressive war drama, occasionally just a little over the edge, which makes it a bit over sentimental. But it all works very well again.

Saving Private Lee...

The sentimental layer is often thickly buttered and prevents me from a very high mark, but as a war drama it is well executed otherwise. Grandiose war scenes, a gripping story about two brothers who are driven apart. Or actually about brotherly love that is turned by the madness of war. The war scenes are brutal and realistic .. it is sometimes on the verge of "excess harm" ... the effect does come at the end and leaves you with a sad feeling after so much senseless suffering.. If I see the film, I always hope that this can convince you to never want a war again and to choose the path of diplomacy.
