When I saw this film decades ago for the first (and to this day also the only) time I was deeply impressed. Jeff Bridges plays an excellently cool and does not aim for more importance than his role has, Lisa Eichhorn is moving, the music by Jack Nitzsche creates atmosphere cleverly and is at the same time subtly disruptive, the plot is as compelling as it is ambiguous, and the direction gives the actors all the freedom without neglecting the direction of the film itself. However, all that did not make up more than half of the appreciation for me, because above all this is John Heard's film. In almost all of his films that I know, he plays the unreliable antagonist (as in Big and My fellow Americans) or the meaningless authority figure (because who doesn't know him as the father in Home alone?), but in this film he grabs the lead role with both hands and gives an unforgettable portrait of a bitter Vietnam veteran who suddenly thinks he sees a chance to give his life a meaningful turn. Although Jeff Bridges is the star here, he clearly plays second fiddle, because Alex Cutter is the heart of this film. A brilliant leading role for an actor who was unfortunately "demoted" to supporting roles afterwards. And no, after twenty-five years this film has lost none of its power upon review.

By the way, see the review on DVDSavant for an interesting interpretation that sees this film as a modern version of Hamlet.

Beautiful character study and murder mystery, although the latter is on the back burner here. The film mainly has to rely on the two excellent lead actors, with John Heard in particular very good as a traumatized war veteran who gets his teeth into a murder case in which friend Jeff Bridges is involved as a witness. The pace is slow and in terms of plot not much happens, but the dialogues and atmosphere are top notch.

Best to forget that this is a "thriller", because the murder case is only of secondary importance. Was sometimes a bit annoying because of the many dialogues but it can safely be called a cult film, because of complex characters in the form of a love triangle, but also because of the strange history surrounding the production. This is apparently a film that the studio would rather not have made.

Cutter is a crippled veteran who is a drunk and can be quite choleric when something bothers him. Richard Bone is his friend who supports him in his difficult situation and in between a woman, Mo, who has become estranged from Cutter (her husband) after the war disability has changed him. Heard in particular plays his role well as the embittered veteran with his conspiracy theory, but Cutter's Way is a film that, despite being a passion project, fails to make much of an impression and ends disappointingly.
