Like other angels, Seth guides people through death. When one day he comes to help someone who dies on the operating table, he is impressed by the surgeon Maggie (Meg Ryan) who tries to save the man's life. Maggie struggles with her patient's death and Seth tries to help her. Seth becomes increasingly attracted to Maggie and becomes conflicted. Will he give up his immortality to become human and live with her, or will he choose to remain an angel?

City of angels highlights a group of angels who roam the earth, specifically here in Los Angeles, where their job is to watch over humans. They are usually invisible, but can apparently also make themselves presentable to people. In addition, there are also literally "fallen" angels who give up their eternal existence and continue as ordinary human mortals.
So is Seth (Nicolas Cage) who falls in love with cardiac surgeon Maggie (Meg Ryan) and thinks about wanting to live on as a human being. A pretty interesting premise. Still, the film didn't really grab me. The first part of the film is long drawn out. I also don't notice enough chemistry between the two characters. Seth is nothing less than a vulgar stalker and shows up every once in a while. With his black clothing, ditto long cloak, a riot gun was just missing so as not to freak out completely. Not so with Maggie. She becomes intrigued by him, but it's unclear to me what exactly. Then she is in a denial phase. After Seth's transformation, she seems to have forgotten all her issues. All quite sentimental and cheap... Also the "rival" is hardly used anymore.
The ending has a decent plot twist, but that was coming. By the way, I prefer to see Cage in a decent action movie, than this kind of romantic films. Or it must be that his puppy eyes were completely out of whack here. Due to the paranormal approach, another 2.5 *.

Excellent film in which an angel falls in love with a woman and has to decide whether to stay with her. The story of this remake remains beautiful, although this version throws it more on the romance. A nice soundtrack with some nice songs. The film also looks good with beautiful camera work and some nice locations. A calm, pleasant pace and Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan both do well here.

Separate movie. Good acting, but I still don't quite understand the attraction between the protagonists. Cage's character must have seen inspired women before. And Ryan's character thinks Cage is so incredibly beautiful, while I don't exactly think Cage is the handsome type.
In any case, the premise is interesting. It is all neatly worked out. Of course you can guess the ending, but because everyone seems to be resigned to it, it doesn't feel very painful. I do get very curious about Der Himmel über Berlin on which this film is apparently based.
