"Inside here nobody is guilty. Do you believe that?"

This film is based on a true story of Doctor Drauzio Varella who worked in the Carandiru prison in São Paulo, Brazil. When Doctor Drauzio visited the prison to help prevent AIDS in prison, he found hundreds of inmates in appalling conditions. When the prisoners revolt, things get very out of hand.

Reasonable film about a true incident in an overcrowded prison in Brazil. A bit unbalanced in tone, but the film certainly has its moments. The many flashbacks of the prisoners are entertaining, but ultimately add little to where the film leads. The film does create a credible picture of the ins and outs in this prison at the time.

When a doctor goes to jail...

What starts as a fresh registration of various characters and the apparently cheerful prison life in Sao Paolo with flashbacks of what this and that have eaten, changes in the second half of the film into a fierce, cold, grim confrontation with no chance. The fact that it is based on true facts makes it even more poignant. I was very impressed. Thumbs up for the doctor's motives.

Beautiful movie poster too.

Solid.

Although the design is quite clumsy. The build-up of the film takes a very long time, so in the beginning I thought it was just some vignettes about the prisoners in a typical (?) Brazilian prison. Have already seen a few movies/docus on the subject and either they are all about Carandiru or it is more normal there.

Rather, it is a closed commune where violence is much more present than outside and where the guards mainly contribute to the poor conditions. You follow a number of characters and get to see why they are there, but actually it is a build-up to a major rebellion that unfolds during the last half hour.

Acting is okay, visually it is somewhat poor, although the ending manages to make up for it. But it is mainly the melodrama that takes the sting out of the film. Sometimes the sentiment is simply too thick, which reduces the impact and the long build-up was also unnecessary. I think I could have done 45 minutes without losing much.

But okay for once.

2.5*
