“Tell me a story where everything works out in the end for the evil witch.”

Mixed feelings at Cake. The start is excellent and the acting by Aniston and the other actors is rock solid. But the movie is also very slow, and not in a good way. There's also a subplot around Anna Kendrick that doesn't work at all, and is worked into the film in a strange way. There are some emotional and heartfelt moments in the film, but to get there you have to go through a very tough middle part. Whether it's worth it will differ for everyone

Aniston does well in this drama, but they've made her ugly. Not only with those scars but she has also clearly gained weight (it could also be from those loose fitting clothes) and has quite a lot of wrinkles for a 45 year old. And to think that Horrible Bosses 2 is from the same year. But Aniston can really carry these kinds of roles. The chemistry between her and Adriana Barraza as her loyal housekeeper is good. Sam Worthington's character is little explored and his pain at the loss of his wife is not really portrayed, except for a small frown on the face. After an intriguing start, the film calmly continues. Only at the end do you see with the present from Aniston's husband's son. I expected him earlier, for example in her hallucinations. So you have to be in the mood for a slow movie. The shaky cam that is used every now and then is a bit redundant.

Claire Bennett [Jennifer Aniston] is banned from a support group for people with chronic pain because of her callous reaction to group member Nina Collins [Anna Kendrick]'s decision to end her life. But Nina continues to haunt her, so Claire decides to make an effort to find out what prompted Nina to make her tragic decision. That puts her in touch with Nina's husband Roy [Sam Worthington] with whom she develops an emotional bond. Aniston does prove he can handle dramatic roles and there's good support from Adriana Barraza as Claire's haunted housekeeper, but Patrick Tobin's screenplay gives us little reason to sympathize with the main character.
