A decent film about a young man who leads a gang after the death of their leader. It is a fine crime film in itself with a good story, but the film fails to really excel in any area. The relationship between the boy and the girl is certainly the most compelling aspect of the film. Overall, it is easy to watch and the portrayal of the era is well done.

Well, that Riley is really a creep; the girl was actually quite likeable, and only the sound/music was a real plus.
For the rest, fairly mediocre acting full of improbabilities.
A scaredy-cat of a gangster at the beginning suddenly takes over the entire gang within fifteen minutes.
Naivest co-star of all time who is willing to kill herself for a murderer, and the so-called brilliant ending doesn't make much sense either; she sees him talking while he's recording that LP, so she must have seen that he said more than just 'I love you', but anyway, good for her that she thinks he loved her.

With supporting roles for Andy Serkis, Sean Harris, and John Hurt, among others, this superfluous remake of the 1948 British crime classic should at least have turned out better. Riley lacks menace as Pinky Brown, who eliminates a key figure in local crime and demands recognition for it. To achieve this, however, he must ensure that the only eyewitness, Rose [Andrea Riseborough], does not betray him. Mirren is good as Rose's determined mother, but filming in often sunny locations largely strips away the ominous atmosphere of the original.
