Brought this one along and I didn't really have any expectations, but I thought it was a great movie. I thought it was mostly an authentic film. The main characters were very convincing.

The story was simple, but I certainly didn't find it disturbing.

The film isn't as groundbreaking as American Beauty, but I certainly didn't think it was a bad idea either.

A nice light-hearted film, but I expected a little more from a Sam Mendes. The nice level is not maintained throughout the film, but is strongly dependent on the couples that Verona and Burt meet.

As a result of Burt's grandparents' immigration, there is nothing left for them to stay in Colorado. They are also moving and the commitment to a fun road movie has started. On their way they meet all kinds of bizarre and strange acquaintances. Even more than the location, they look for acquaintances with whom they feel good to build a new life.

Although Mendes' approach and message are quite interesting, the film does not always come across well because of its absurdity. It provides enough comic moments, but you can't call it all serious. The role of the family is very much discussed in Revolutionary road and certainly also in American beauty. Away we go has that too, specifically about the upbringing of children. There is nothing more difficult than raising children. There is no correct method or manual on how to raise a child. All the couples they meet have their own special view on parenting. That is quite fascinating and you can say that most of them are from love. The how-question is completely redundant...

It is also thanks to j0enne above that I was extra stimulated. The scene with the tilted uterus is the absolute highlight of the film. Great laughter too, the quarrel and the man's sincere surprise is so recognizable.

Although Maggie plays a very strange character, the scenes with that couple were also very strong. "Fly away Burt! Fly Away Burt" and the buggy, how do you get there? Beautiful!

Not a topper that you might expect from Mendes, but certainly sufficient. 3.0*.

Pretty nice.

Seems to me to be a film that directors themselves like to make, especially in between a lot of bigger and heavier films. A rather simple road movie, in which a pregnant couple tries to figure out where to build their home.

The mix of drama and comedy works well, which is not really surprising since more road movies opt for that setup. It's mainly Krasinski and Rudolph who manage to carry the film, with some wacky secondary characters they encounter along the way. Usually a bit annoying people, but also funny characters every time.

The soundtrack is by far the least element of this film, also visually it is not that much, although Mendes' basic quality comes out a little better there. I don't think a film will stay with me for long, it's just a bit too sluggish for that and the film manages to make a little too little impression where Mendes seems to want to, but otherwise a nice snack.

3.0*
