When woodworker Michael McCann discovers that his wife is pregnant with another man, they get divorced. He moves to another city, where he leads a secluded life. He only has any contact with April, the owner of the local pawn shop. He spends his free time collecting coins. When he comes home on a cold winter evening, he finds the body of a woman in the snow. She appears to have died of a heroin overdose. He finds her two-year-old daughter in his house. Michael calls her Mathilda and decides to adopt the girl...

Loosely based on George Eliot's 1861 novel "Silas Marner". This was Martin's third script based on classic literature. Roxanne was based on "Cyrano de Bergerac", and LA Story on "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The now 37-year-old Alyssa Austin made her debut in this film at the age of 5. Both Steve Martin and Laura Linney became father and mother for the first time more than ten years after the release of this film. Surprisingly, this only happened at an older age. In 2012, Martin became a father at the age of 67, and Linney had a child in 2014 at the age of 49.
Before Novocaine was released, "A Simple Twist of Fate" was the lowest grossing film starring Steve Martin in the main role. The film was shown in 319 theaters over the Labor Day weekend. That probably explains the low gross profit. Together with Mixed Nuts, this was one of two box office flops for Martin. The actor finally decided to appear in Father of the Bride Part II. This in the hope that he was able to return to a successful film. Yet this film is somewhat underestimated, and the audience was probably hoping for a hilarious Martin. This while the story is more dramatized. A role that Martin knows how to fill very well in my opinion. Perhaps not his highest-grossing film ever made, but certainly not the worst.
