Precious plot

"We are all precious"

The film tells the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born in Harlem, in a harsh environment. Life is not exactly smiling: she is expecting her father for the second time. At home, she walks on eggshells to prevent her mother (Mo'Nique), an intensely angry woman, from mistreating her. Her life changes when she gets the chance to transfer to an alternative school. There she comes under the care of Ms. Rain (Paula Patton). A woman who understands her and makes her feel that she is special and has talents. Here Precious begins her new future away from the darkness, pain and loveless environment and takes her young life into her own hands.

Precious is a black teenage girl from Harlem who is overweight and unable to read and write. Her mother abuses her, she is raped by her father, becomes pregnant by him and as if all that were not enough, her doctor tells her that she is HIV positive. So a lot of misery that some may experience as a bit too much of a good thing. At times the film rubs against the spiritual and therefore the tone is quite Oprah Winfrey, but I think Oprah Winfrey is a nice woman and this is a very good film. Gabourey Sidibe leaves a deep impression as a tormented soul and Mo'Nique's portrayal of evil mother is simply brilliant. Very rightly so that she has received an Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta for this. Her beautiful playing comes out well in the scene where someone comes by from social services, she quickly puts on that neat wig and in the blink of an eye changes from a crooked slut into a cringing caring mother who can't find work. So very well done.

Film wants a lot and has its heart in the right place, but fails in the execution. That is partly due to the enormous amount of trauma that Precious receives, that really could have been a little less and the message would have been the same, if possible not stronger. However, Sidibe knows how to keep a constant sympathy and that's great. In addition, I find the role of Mo'Nique terribly exaggerated and nowhere credible. Only at the end in one scene does it show what it could have been, but then it is already pulling a dead horse. Patton actually has a terrible role but still manages to make something out of it with enough charisma, it didn't bother me. Furthermore, a nice atmosphere sketch that simply could have been much better. 2.0*.

Not quite.

Precious is undoubtedly a heavy film, but compared to a lot of other films, what is actually shown is not nearly as heavy. It is mainly the implications and short scenes that should form the heavier images, otherwise this is actually more of a comedy at times with many violent background events.

For starters, Sidibe plays well. I knew her a bit as an actress, but this seems to be her magnum opus, and not surprising, because she does it very well. I thought Mo'Nique was even better, especially towards the end you can see as a viewer how good she is as an actress. The emotions regularly splash raw from the screen and are palpable, Precious does that well and immediately forms the strongest point.

The story just didn't grab me that much. It's interesting, but it's not very exciting. These kind of films have to rely mainly on some pretty strong scenes, because otherwise I found it just a bit dragging without progress. Many secondary characters are a bit boring and the film as a whole is not intriguing enough. I couldn't get into it, it just seemed like there was just no progress.

Visually it looks nice from a cinematographic point of view, but I found the camera work to be very substandard. Daniels uses a lot of nervous zoom-ins to make it look realistic as a whole, but this effect felt forced after minutes. Just tell the story, no unnecessary tricks to make it all seem more real.

Precious especially took me too long and I never got really good at it. You get to see the strongest scene towards the end, which lifts it as a whole from a 2.0* to a 2.5*. That scene misses touching me, while the rest of the film couldn't. As a whole it's heavy and heavy enough, but just not very captivating, unfortunately. It's just missing something.

I thought to myself what adjective is suitable for this movie. The word precious, which is also the title of the film, is perfect for this film. This movie has it all, from great subject matter to amazing cinematography, Calculated and coherent screenplay, Proper editing with the right music, an attractive and promising direction from "Daniels", which promises to see other good films from him. But beyond this is the brilliant acting of the actors. Flawless performances in a powerful triangle of three impressive women have made the film impressive. Gabourey Sidibe, In the role of "Precious", although it is his first film experience, it is very impressive and excellent. She is amazing and was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Although she did not win the Oscar, she really deserved it. Mo'Nique portrays an obscenity and violent mother and a failed woman so powerfully that it impresses everyone and leaves no hesitation in awarding her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Attractive and powerful "Paula Patton” appears in the role of Mrs. Blue and is impossible to imagine the film without his presence in the film. The film was nominated for six Oscars and won two Oscars in 2010. Also, at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, he won the Jury and Audience Award. This movie is an original cinematic work full of human suffering and the sparks of hope that sprout in the heart of man to find his worth. It really deserved to be among the ten best movies of 2009.
