Director Gus Van Sant (who is also gay) made a fairly conventional film for his own sake (to the disappointment of some of his fans), but "Milk" did win an "Oscar" for the well-playing Sean Penn, and for the screenwriter. Dustin Lance Black.

The story is set in the early 1970s, with the American police invading gay bars for no reason, after which the clientele is violently removed or arrested. It's high time for a backlash, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) thinks, who decides to go into politics to give the gay minority a voice and a face.

The story is captivating and interesting from the first to the last minute (lasting about two hours) and Sean Penn rightly won an "Oscar" for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, who does not shy away from political deals and games. The cast is quite impressive anyway, because apart from Sean Penn we also see Josh Brolin (as Dan White, a man who is clearly in trouble with himself but doesn't know how or what), Emile Hirsch (co-activist of Harvey Milk) and James Franco. (lover of Harvey Milk).

All in all, an atmospheric and beautiful portrait of the Martin Luther King of the gay movement.

Beautiful, strong movie. I got into it easily and I think it's a very good story and suitable for a film adaptation. It captivated me from start to finish and what Harvey Milk did for the gay community, among other things, is so important. I think the acting is fine, as is the camera work. An 8. 4*

Interesting biopic of Harvey Milk who, first as an activist and later as a politician, gave voice and face to the gay rights movement somewhere in the 1970s. Excellent rendition of an excellent and convincing Sean Penn. Gives this film extra cachet which later resulted in a deserved Oscar.

Furthermore, excellent camera work and a fairly smooth film by Van Sant. The others also did well, with Brolin in the lead, but let's not forget Franco. The biopic is compelling and captivates throughout the film. Some nasty statements about gays gave me a sense of vicarious shame.
