45 Years plot

It's a week before the 45th wedding anniversary of Kate and Geoff Mercer (played by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay) when a letter arrives for Geoff. The body of his first lover has been found in the ice of the Swiss Alps where she went missing in the early 1960s. The news throws the couples seriously and it is questionable whether their marriage will make it to the party in the five days that remain.

Excellent film about an elderly woman who finds out that her husband almost married another woman before her. Not really a story, but more of an intimate and slow portrait about an older couple in which the marriage suddenly comes into question. Two modest and subtle, yet strong roles by Tom Courtenay and especially Charlotte Rampling.

That in a marriage of 45 years (or longer) former "flames" sometimes want to pass in review, I can agree with that. That doesn't necessarily have to be a problem, but wringing sometimes does.

Andrew Haigh has made a small, sensitive film about this theme, which relies mainly on the modest performances of Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. Very human, very recognizable. Very beautiful.

The kind of movie where at the beginning I thought: I don't know if I'm going to like this, but that I started to like better as time went on. I like the style. Understated, subtle, very 'real' in my opinion. I think the acting is strong, realistic, and I like that you don't get ready-made answers to everything. That suits this film well and fits with the subtle. Nice to have seen this one. A 7. 3.5*
