Stutz plot

"Meet a different kind of therapist."

Phil Stutz is one of the world's foremost psychiatrists. He has helped countless patients in 40 years, including world-class creative professionals and business leaders, and many of them therapy skeptics. Directed by friend and patient Jonah Hill, this documentary explores Stutz's life and guides viewers through his signature visualization exercises. When Hill sits down with Stutz for an unorthodox session that reverses their typical doctor-patient dynamic, they bring the exercises to life in a humorous, vulnerable, and ultimately therapeutic experience.

“What people think of this movie doesn't matter. The important thing is that we made it”. These are Hill's closing words in this groundbreaking documentary in which Hill comes to the conclusion after a reasonably fascinating, but conventional first 25 minutes that he must opt for a radically different narrative form. What follows is a portrait of the special relationship Jonah Hill developed with his psychologist (and mentor) Phil Stutz, with whom Hill wanted to show the tools Stutz gave him to escape his state of depression and manage his mood swings. Those lessons are interesting anyway, but it's the radical storytelling style and the uncompromising honesty and openness with which Stutz and Hill speak that make this memorable, especially when Hill turns the tables and asks his mentor some confronting questions. A deeply personal film overflowing with love in the broadest sense of the word, but never heavy-handed. My favorite movie of 2022.
