Salata Baladi plot
They live in Egypt, but filmmaker Nadia Kamel thinks her family is like a 'home salad': a cheerful and remarkable mix of nationalities and religions. Her mother Mary tells the story of her life as the daughter of a Jewish father and an Italian-Catholic mother. Mary herself converts to Islam to marry a Muslim. She takes grandson Nabil and daughter Nadia to Italy on a family visit. She also decides to travel to Israel to visit her nieces whom she has not seen for fifty years. Their family history represents an often underexposed piece of history. The spontaneous and uninhibited questions that grandson Nabil asks his grandmother clarify the complex developments around different national borders and migration flows in the course of the last century. Many languages are spoken in Salata Baladi, but the communication between the family members radiates warmth and tolerance. Family ties appear to be stronger than ideologies and prejudices.
