Rising Gulf plot
Documentary that takes a look at the Gulf states of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. An unprecedented modernization process is underway here. Helped by high oil prices, a new generation of liberal sheikhs are successfully building a self-created dream here. Less than forty years ago, the people of Dubai and Abu Dhabi tented through the desert, until the oil was discovered in 1967. Sheikh bin Zayed al Nayhan, ancestor and founder of the United Arab Emirates, foresightedly decided that his country had to make the leap into the modern world. In less than fifteen years, Dubai managed to launch itself as a tourist hotspot in the Middle East. Dubai also emerged as the business and financial center of the region. But with the import of the modern world, Western norms and values also hitch a ride. What does this mean for the traditional, originally conservative Emiratis? 'Rising Gulf' shows what it means when a modernization process that usually takes more than a hundred years is completed in ten years.
