Kunstneren og Tyven plot

The theft of two capital paintings is the beginning of an unlikely friendship. Using CCTV footage, the duped Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova tracks down the drug-addicted thief at work and confronts him in court. As compensation, she asks him to pose for a portrait. The painting sessions are accompanied by conversations in which the thief talks about his unlucky life and the artist takes care of him with breakfast, hugs and a listening ear. That cannot prevent his self-destructive behavior from first landing him in the hospital and later in prison. But when he is released, the tables are turned.

When artist Barbora Kysilokova discovers that Karl is responsible for the theft of two of her most valuable oil paintings, she makes an impulsive decision. She approaches him and asks if he would like to pose for her. During the sessions, she asks all kinds of personal questions, which leads her to discover that Karl leads an aimless existence as a junkie and criminal. The end result of the sessions turns out to have an enormous impact on both parties involved, but especially on Karl. This unique, fascinating documentary shows the development of this unconventional friendship as well as how art can (for good or bad) influence the lives of the creator and the subject. Ree lets the two main characters speak for themselves and doesn't have to do anything more than register. The result is astonishing, moving and inspiring

It's a special story: a junkie accidentally breaks into an art gallery under the influence and steals two paintings because he likes them, after which the artist he stole from falls in love with him as soon as she sees him in court (although the love remains faith i platonic). It leads to a close friendship that seems to be based on the fact that the junkie and artist are both traumatized, have an obsession with death and self-destruction and are addicted (the artist is addicted to painting and the junkie also seems to love art) . The documentary is pleasant because the junkie and the artist are fun and interesting people (and the artist's art is also pleasant to watch); in stark contrast is the artist's boyfriend, who is a nasty übermoralist on which Scandinavia has the patent. But the film doesn't have much more to offer.

A laudable documentary for its special form alone. Moreover, with an interesting deeper layer about what art brings about.

The fact that the director occasionally works somewhat manipulatively fits in principle with the disruptive picture, but sometimes it also gnaws.
